Limbe Police Station officer-in-charge Gladstone Chipumphula says they will enforce Blantyre City Council’s anti-littering by-laws to promote cleanliness in the city.

He said this on Thursday in Limbe when the station launched a clean-up exercise.

Chipumphula said a clean environment is important because it is free of diseases such as cholera.

He said: “Limbe registered a lot of cholera cases and the first respondents were the police. We were called to help whenever a cholera person was found lying helplessly.

“Therefore, we have decided to be proactive by coming up with various initiatives to promote sanitation and hygiene in our policing area.”

Chipumphula said one of such initiatives is the installation of closed-circuit television (cctv) cameras to monitor people’s conduct in Limbe Town.

“With the cctv, we will be able to enforce by-laws to arrest people who will be found littering the city,” he said.

Limbe Central Ward councillor Gerald Lipikwa commended the station for the initiative.

“Blantyre City Council has the responsibility of making the city clean, but we have a number of stakeholders in this initiative, including the police, minibus owners and the Asian Business Community,” he said.

Blantyre City Vendors Association secretary Harris Kaphetsa said the exercise will boost their business as it will create a clean environment.

“If we have a clean business environment, we will attract more customers, thereby making more profits,” he said.
